Suzy Bolt's Top Ten Tips for Promoting Recovery - 5. Supplements and Medications

Supplements and medications - take the right ones, not all of them

What supplements and medicines should we be taking?

Ive seen many thousands of posts about this in Facebook groups and there seems to be a few things that most people are doing alongside the hundreds of other things that people are experimenting with. It’s always worth getting good advice from your doctor/nutritionist and or pharmacist for anything like this as everyones body is different and will react differently to supplements as well as have implications on any other meds you might be taking, but the basics I would suggest to anyone would be: A good, high strength vitamin D. A good high strength Vit C with bioflavonoids, magnesium Citrate to help with sleep, omega 3 and 6 to help manage joint inflammation pain and cell renewal, an over the counter antihistamine to help stabilise the general mast cell overactivity in the body (talk to your doctor about mast cell activation and taking an H1 and H2 blocker if you feel that MCAS is something you may be suffering from) a pro biotic as mentioned before - too many on the market to mention but make sure it doesn’t have histamine in it if you know you have MCAS.

If you can, get your B vit levels checked as this helps us extract energy from our food and also regulates our nervous system so a good B spectrum vitamin might be worth experimenting with to see if it makes any difference.

Iron is also something that’s worth checking your levels on as it may help with shifting the fatigue a little.

Hydrating like a pro athlete is also a good idea and taking some natural electrolytes can be pretty helpful to many -something like coconut water with ice is a fantastic natural dehydrator.

If you are feeling utterly overwhelmed, anxious or depressed, please know that this is also a symptom of many illnesses as well as a by product of having all of this go on for you and the changes to your life you are experiencing. Im a huge advocate of getting access to counselling and if needs be an SSRI (anti depressants) to help you through the challenges that chronic ill health can offer.
